Experts Say Luxury Is Becoming More About Personal Experiences and Storytelling

Luxury travel trends are shifting in 2026 as experts highlight the increasing importance of personalized experiences, storytelling and immersion in local culture across destinations such as Japan, South Africa and new, trendy destinations.
Travelers now care more about the experiences a trip offers than about the destination itself. Places with diverse activities are becoming more attractive for luxury travelers. Ulrica Schmid, a luxury concierge who organizes high-end travel experiences, explains that destinations offering a variety of options are now the most popular. These destinations attract clients looking for more than just a place to stay, but for unique experiences.
“Japan is the hotspot number one, every destination who can give experiences and can sell the experiences, they are winning,” said Schmid.
This shift is not limited to travel but also other luxury industries. François de Guillebon, a French journalist and editor specializing in whisky and lifestyle, explains that storytelling is essential in his field, as consumers today are looking for passion and real content rather than products alone.
“I think you have to know how to tell stories; people want passion and real stories about products,” said de Guillebon.
This shift is happening across the luxury market, with high-end clients becoming more selective in their choices. This change is also happening in other industries, where consumers prefer quality experiences over quantity.
“The younger generation drinks less and less, but when they do, they drink better and better,” said de Guillebon.
As global trends continue to evolve, experts agree that luxury is not only defined by products or destinations, but by meaningful, personalized experiences that connect with consumers on a deeper level.
