With the 2024 Olympics hosted in Paris in July, the city is excited by all the preparations and debates on whether the citizens should be worried.
A survey from the Paris Institute of Public Opinion written in 2021 states that 60 percent of Parisians feel proud of hosting such an event, while 40 percent are worried about the potential obstacles people will face, like the rise in costs associated with the event, or that people might not feel safe because of the overpopulation.
“Some Parisians are very excited about this event that happens once in a lifetime and the economy of the country; others are concerned about the safety and the costs of the Olympics,” says Zoe Ansart, a Parisian citizen. "The Olympics are a great opportunity for people to see the beauty of the city and the unique culture.”
Young adults and students from Paris have also had mixed feelings about such an elaborate and costly event being held in the French capital. Many anticipate the arrival of the athletes and fans with eagerness, while others are a little worried about how the city will transform during the weeks of competitions.
"It's once in a lifetime to see such an event in my city,” said Louise Riley, a 20-year-old college student. “A significant percentage of young adults share the same enthusiasm; they are all excited about what the Olympics can bring.”
The economic benefits of hosting the Paris Olympics 2024 are also a debate. People might think that the event will give a significant financial boost because of new jobs and tourists coming for the event.
“Small local businesses are a little concerned about their store and how the Olympics will affect the daily operations,” says J. Carmen, owner of a small store in Paris.
In the midst of mixed feelings about the global athletic event, one thing is certain: the Olympics will be hosted in Paris. It is yet to be seen whether French citizens will enjoy being its host or they will regret being under the world’s spotlight this summer.
